There is a piece of land on the outskirts of Kortrijk spanning 14 hectares that is to house Kortrijk's merged hospital's new campus. This location is connected to the Groene Gordel (green ring) around the city. The new hospital provides 1,000 beds and is a merger of four existing hospitals in Kortrijk. This means it is an enormous building, designed in such a way that one does not have an overview of the total size of the building at any given time. The entire complex is built around a series of large inner gardens from 20 to 60 metres that will be bordered by buildings. Each inner garden with its surrounding buildings forms a separate block. All the wings are the same width and the whole complex has the same composition. The architects responsible are the Austrians Baumschlager & Eberle, and the Belgian FDA (now Osar architects).
